Levaquin and Kidney Stones? My doctor's nurse practitioner recently put me on levaquin for a sinus infection w/ bacterial tonsillitis. Before this I was on Azithromycin and it helped, but didn't know it out. When I got home I started doing some research and I see this allusions to kidney stones but not a lot on prevalence. What concerns me is that I am a very big coffee drinker and even though I've been light on the coffee these last 2 weeks and drink plenty of water anyway (because I know what happens if you don't) that I may have some predisposition to urinary crystalization.
Other than drinking water like a fish is there any other way (home based or OTC) that can help with this and am I at higher risk, despite my drinking only 1-2 cups of coffee daily now, for stones?
ckm1956 replied: "Water is the key. Drinking cranberry juice may also help.
Antibiotics don't make a big difference in stone formation.
If you are (or become) a frequent stone former, be sure to see a urologist. There are some metabolic conditions that can cause stones to form."
RuneAmok replied: "I've not heard of Levaquin CAUSING stones - I was prescribed that when I had a kidney stone, because I apparently had some type of infection as well.
I've done some research into prevention of stones, including herbal remedies, and my research has shown that it's pretty much luck of the draw.
The best thing you can do is drink the 2-3 qts. of water per day. Don't bother with herbal remedies (although they probably won't hurt), don't bother with pricy products like Uriflow or Kidney Dr., and dietary changes are fine - IF you stick with them.
I have no idea what type of stone I have (or had), but I drink a great deal of coffee and eat a lot of chocolate, so one would assume I had a calcium oxalate stone. But I can't say for sure. Since I've been like this for so long, it seems unlikely to me that I would get my first tiny stone at 41, but what do I know?
My plan, with my doctor's approval, is to drink plenty of liquids and leave it at that."
Question about kidney infection and levaquin.? At the end of September I went to the emergency room for terrible pain in my side and back, nausea and vomiting as well. They told me I had a urinary tract infection that turned into a kidney infection and prescribed me with Keflex. I took 1 pill 4 times a day for 10 days. I went back to the doctor this Friday and I still have a kidney infection so he prescribed me Levaquin and I have an ultrasound on Wednesday to check for kidney stones. Since I have started taking this medicine (in the mornings) when I go to bed at night, my legs become numb and I get shortness of breath. Just when I am about to fall asleep I quickly wake up and breath deeply to catch some air. Is this a side effect? It terrifies me to go to bed at night now.
Thanks...I am a worrier lol

Frequent urination after uti/kidney stones? 2 weeks ago I went to the ER with kidney stones. I had terrible pain and kept having to urinate, but not much was coming out. I passed a stone later that night(but was told I have several others that may or may not pass) and then I was still have feelings of a uti, so I went to the doctor that Monday. She gave me a 10 day supply of antibiotics (Levaquin) to take, because she said I may have been developing an infection. Well while I was on the medication my urinating returned to normal.
I finished the antibiotics on Wednesday, and this past Saturday I started getting the symptom like I constantly have to pee, right after I pee, 10 minutes later I could go again. I'm drinking eight glasses of water a day, but still I shouldn't be having to pee every 30 minutes! Is this normal? I'm just freaking out, because I had trouble 4 years ago after a UTI where I had problems and they wouldn't go away and I had to end up going on all these bladder meds. I was finally able to go off them about a year ago and have been fine. And I'm just praying this isn't coming back. So I am wondering if perhaps this is left over symptoms from the kidney stones & uti? that perhaps will go away once my body returns to normal?
When I go every hour, I am urinating. It's not a little, but not a ton.
They did a cat scan (2 of them at the ER *even tho i have no insurance*) they just told me that I have several small stones in each kidney and they don't know when or if I will pass them.
Joseph J replied: "firstly go for a ultrasound scan to know how many stones are there in ur kidney
whether hydronephrosis is there or not
then hav a complete urine test
and tell me on
u may hav multiple calculi that causes pain and uti like symptoms when passed out
hav a plenty of water intake"
Question about kidney stones? In September I went to the ER and it turned out I had a kidney infection. They gave me keflex, nausea medicine, and hydrocodone. I went to my doctor a few weeks ago to find out if it went away and my urine test showed I still had the infection so he gave me levaquin and more pain pills and set me up for an ultrasound. The levaquin messed with my body so he switched me to bactrim. I went to the ultrasound and they found a 4mm kidney in my right kidney which was 5 days ago. My right side still hurts and I have been collecting my urine. But yesterday, I started having terrible pains in my left side as well. It goes from my left side of my back down to the left side of my groin. Is it possible I could have developed a stone in my left kidney as well? I have a CT scan in a few days but I just would like some opinions. I am definitely worried. I have heard all kinds of horror stories. Any info would be great, thanks!
BP replied: "It certainly could be another stone.
Most kidney stones are basic (as opposed to being acidic). I've had a couple of these, but not for about 8 years now. Drink about 8-12 ounces of Cranberry or Cran-Raspberry juice/drink a day. Drink a couple of glasses of water each day as well. I'm not a doctor, but like I said I haven't had a recurrence for 8 years.
Also cranberry juice helps prevent and get rid of infections. Berries tend to be acidic, so if your stones are basic, this will help dissolve and prevent them from forming in the first place. It helps prevent infections because it lowers the pH of the urine and the infecting bacteria aren't able to grow as easily in the lower acidic environment created by drinking cranberry/berry.
My first kidney stone sent me to the ER."
vraag replied: "Yes, you could have developed a stone on the other side also. The person who answered previous to me gave good suggestions."
Adult American replied: "Welcome to the world of kidney stones. I am told it is the worst pain possible and most people wind up going to the ER for the pain as they pass, if indeed they can be passed. Many require a noninvasive ultrasonic intervention to break the stones into smaller pieces so they can be passed. This somehow seems to me to sound like less the enjoyable experience one wishes for in life.
As to your pain, I doubt you have another stone so suddenly, most likely your body is suffering from spasms on the left because you have pulled a muscle there from the constant pain on the right. This is the most likely cause but be sure to mention it tomorrow to your doctor."
Multiple Kidney infections? Hello all, my name is Mindy and I am 23. Since October of 2008, I have had a kidney infection every month and sometimes twice a month. I have also had kidney stones (which was in October 2008) which since then my kidney infection will not go away. I have been to the emergency room quite a few times for trememdous pain. I have been on Bactrim, Ciprofloxin, Levaquin,,,and none of them help. I have just went and got another CT scan on Thursday so wont know the results til after the holidays. They are wondering if I either A) Have another stone, or B) never passed the one I had before since I never saw it (I was straining my urine and then one day the pain went away for a few days so I thought I passed it. I am now have the most terrible pains in my lower back all the way down to my legs when I wake in the morning. Another thing though is that when I have sex, which I rarely do because of this problem. I bleed, and I bleed heavily as to where my sheets are soaked in blood. What could be the cause of all these things and how can these multiple kidney infection affect my kidneys if they have not already.
Nora replied: "Having multiple trips to the ER, I'm not sure what you've heard, so let me tell you what I know:
1) It might be a little late, but cranberry juice (juice, not the fake kind) as an acidic content that can help kidneys. Yes, i know, it's more commen in bladdar infections, but it can help some of the problems.
2) It sounds like you've had lots of medicine, but when I had kidney stones, I was able to get shots from my nurse... there are lots of painkilling-shots that are cheap and immediately effective. I was able to call my nurse and get an immediate appt. for a shot. It took about five minutes and gave me enough relief to make it to the ER and wait my turn ;)
3)Ask your doctors about medicines to help break up the stone(s). While not often given for smaller stones, you sound like you're having some pretty rough problems. The medicine can often disolve the bigger stones into more passible pieces that cause less pain and bleeding.
4) It's very possible you passed the stone without knowing. During the pain and 24 hours after all the pain stops, it is recommended that you urinate in a cup and pour it through a strainer. I know this sounds unpleasant, but if you are able to locate the stone, you can take it into hospital laboratories and have it chemically analyzed. The doctors can then use the results to determine what is causing the problems. This is particularly helpful in the less common types of stones.
5) Fluids. No, seriously, fluids. Lots more! It sounds like the advise everyone gives sick people, but the fluids you drink will force the stone out much more quickly than it would on its own.
I really hope this helps you! I'd definately try to get in contact with my general doctor's nurse and ask about the possibility of getting a shot for the pain and a per ion for a good pain-killer (I've even been on short-term doses of vicodin)."
kidney problems? I found out five days ago that I had a kidney infection because there was blood in my urine ( not visible to the eye) the doctor out me on levaquin but i am still feeling sick and pain in my back. I went back today and he said it might be kidney stones....is it possible to have and infection and kidney stones at the same time...there is still blood in my urine. Also i cant eat or stop sleeping is that normal with an infection or stones????
i have pain as well as hard times focusing and concentrating my body just wants to sleep but i am confused with my symptoms...they also found a non pathogen of klaibsella pneomnae in my could that be the cause of my problems?
Hameed replied: "if you don't have pain in your kidney, then there's no stone hopfully.

countryboy replied: "You can have stones and no pain, I do. Blood in the urine can be more than just an infection, but I'm not a doctor or your doctor. Just an example not to say anything like this is your problem now, about 10 years ago I had blood in my urine, it look like red wine. The outcome after going to the doctor for an exam was a cancer bladder tumor. Best thing to do if it doesn't clear up within a short time and the doctor you have keeps putting you off, see another doctor that is a kidney specialist."
ROS replied: "It is possible to have kidney stones and also have an infection. In fact, if a kidney stone causes significant blockage of the urinary tract, this could cause urine to be backed up, which can lead to infection. There are X-rays and ultrasound that can help to determine if you have a kidney stone.
If your kidneys are not functioning properly this can cause toxic waste to accumulate in your body. These toxins affect the cells and other tissues and organs and can cause you to feel sick and tired.

Multiple kidney infections? What does this mean? I am 23, have 2 children. Don't know if that makes a difference. But anyhow, since October of 2008, I have had 11 kidney infections and kidney stones once. How many kidney infections can it take for kidney failure, kidney damage...does this necessarily mean I have kidney disease? I am either at the ER or at my doctors office every month. I have taken Bactrim, Levaquin, Amoxicilin, Ciprofloxin...which none have worked. I went last week for my 3rd CT Scan...still waiting on the results. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any info would be greatly appreciated...or you can email me at.
Thanks alot!

LINDA R replied: "You need to take the antibiotics exactly as prescribed, until they are all. If you don't, the infection may not be completely gone. If you take antibiotics as directed and still have frequent infections, you need to see a urologist to get help to figure out what is causing your problems."
kidney pain/uti? I have frequent UTIs and was certain that I woke up with one 4 days ago. I went to the doctor who said that I had white blood cells, blood, and renal cells in my urine and diagnosed me with a kidney infection. He said he was going to have the lab culture the sample to determine the type of bacteria. He put me on Levaquin. They called yesterday and said the culture was negative... no infection. The nurse said to keep taking the antibiotics and call if there is no improvement. Today the burning and urgency is returning and I have a dull ache with the occasional sharp twinge in my left kidney area. Could this be a kidney stone? I certainly wouldn't consider the pain severe. I have had issues with interstitial cystitis, can that affect the kidneys? Why are there renal cells in my urine?! And why would they tell me to keep taking the antibiotics if the culture was negative? I thought Levaquin was really strong, is there a bug that it can't kill? any answers would be appreciated
cinder replied: "I use to get frequent UTI's alot and yes I did have kidney stones. They are painful, depending if they are moving around. Did they say if you had any blood in your urine? Kidney stones are no picnic believe me, so if you think you have any, get a second opinion.....before you get into real pain. Take care"
Can an acute kidney infection be antibacterial? I have had a UTI and kidney infection for 3 1\2 weeks with fever, chills, pain etc. I saw my GP at onset and was found to have infected urine. We sent urine out for culture and it did not grow bacteria. Three days later I was in the ER with a full blown acute kidney infection and looked like I was hemmoraging blood in my urine. ER doc says I have infected urine and sent me home on meds and pain killers. Sent labs out - again, no bacteria. Followed up a few days later with GP with fever, chills, pain. Once again, infected urine in the office, no bacteria in the culture. I'm resistant to Cipro, Penicillin, Levaquin and allergic to Macrobid. I've been on Bactrim DS, IV and oral Levaquin, Rocephin and Ceftin - and no improvement. CT @ ER came back negative (i.e. stones). I do not have Interstital Cystitis.
I'm a teacher and go back to my kids in about two weeks. I look and feel like death warmed over. This is a vicious cycle I have to get under control.
bud88cynthia replied: "It may not be a bacterial infection, it could be a viral infection or an inflammation due to blockage.. called phyla nephritis or it could be that the tubes from your kidneys to the bladder are too small and cause back up of the urine into your bloodstream... you really need to start drinking cranberry juice and distilled water only. Take Vit c, and flush out your kidneys (dont go overboard).. just a constant flush of clean room temp water... no salt for about a week... I suggest you call a uroligist and get them to do a special test with dye to see why this is happening... it doesnt hurt but if you dont find out what is going on, you could die, easily... I have had these same issues and almost died several times. I had several operations to open the tubes and I am fine now.. good luck.."

I'm having right side abdominal pain at night - what could it be? 4 weeks ago I began to experience right side abdomonial pain. A urinalysis revealed blood & bacteria & I was diagnosed with a kidney infection. I took Levaquin for 10 days. Symptoms improved but did not completely go away. After 2 weeks another urinalysis indicated blood but no infection; an x-ray showed kidney stones. I was referred to a urologist & had an ivp. After reviewing the x-ray & ivp results, the urologist advised that I had a kidney stone that was too big to pass & recommended lithotripsy...but this kidney stone is on the LEFT side...not the source of my pain! The pain that have been feeling has progressed & is occurring every night. I am virtually painfree during the day...but after about 4-5 hours of sleep...the pain awakens me from a sound sleep. After resting in a reclining position for 1-2 hours the pain subsides. I have made no correlation to eating habits & my OB/GYN ruled out anything in the pelvis...not surprising as the pain is up higher under the ribcage.

honeychild_star replied: "That sounds like your gall bladder, I had pain there and had an ultrasound and it showed i had cholesterol deposits in there.... which is practically the first stage before gall stones, but I was advised if i eat less fatty foods they would most likely dissapear over time! Do you feel it more intensly after you have eaten a heavy meal or a fattier meal? It could also be reffering pain from your kidney infection, just like with tonsilitis most people get an ear ache and show no infection, its reffering pain. Check it out with your doctor to make sure!
Good Luck"
TweetyBird replied: "Instead of posting questions you should be directing this to your urologist. You cannot get a diagnosis online."
Jean C replied: "Abdominal pain is very hard to diagnose. Owing to the setup of the nervous system in the abdomen, the problem may be in a very different place from where you feel the pain.
It could be possibly be gall bladder pain, which usually radiates around to the back.
I once had chronic right upper quadrant pain, but it came from trapping gas in the hepatic flexure of the colon. It stopped as soon as I quit having six donuts and three cups of coffee for breakfast.
Good luck!"
larry L replied: "Pain radiates. I have had recurrent kidney stones for he past twenty years. I have never been able to pinpoint where the stone is. Also, if there is one stone, there are probably more. These would be small though. I had IVP's trying to detect stones I knew were there, but to no avail. Once I went through the whole procedure, and the urologist showed me the results immediately. The x-rays showed that the blood flow was being blocked by "something," but that something was undetectable. All they could do was infer its existence. I don't think they would want to do an expensive CAT scan on something whose existence can be easily inferred."
panepanelli replied: "You have gallstone(s). I had symptoms for 2 years: bloating, fullness, and pain. In the emergency room, they did a CT Scan and found a very large gallstone. I had surgery to remove my gallbladder and now I'm fine. Check out this site: "
